Mormons invented themselves just as other religious and ethnic groups invented themselves. But Mormons did so in such a singularly impressive way that we will probably always remain baffled as to how exactly it happened.

About This Quote

The Mormons are a unique group of people. They have set themselves apart from others in so many ways, but it is still impossible to understand how they originated. The Mormons have really only been around for a few hundred years, but their origins are still mysterious. The first Mormon temple was built in the mid-1800s, but that alone does not explain how they came into existence.

The answer does not seem to lie in the Bible, either. There is no significant evidence that Joseph Smith was called to start the Mormons as a religious group at all. There are some records that suggest he may have been called to start other groups, but none of them ended up being what we know as the Mormons today.
